Partnership for Better Living Resources
It is estimated that two billion people—a quarter of the world’s population—live without access to safe, sanitary toilets. To achieve SDG 6.2 (‘Achieving access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all by 2030’) investment must quadruple. However, current subsidy and demand activation models aren’t enough to meet the needs of some communities around the world. Instead, we must create scalable, viable, and affordable sanitation and hygiene markets. USAID and LIXIL, through its social business, SATO, have joined forces to launch the Partnership for Better Living (PBL) to expand the market for sustainable sanitation and hygiene solutions. Combining the scale and reach of USAID, with the design and innovation expertise of LIXIL and its SATO brand, the PBL is working with USAID to co-create country-level activities that will improve the availability and reliability of supply chains in countries of shared interest. PBL is initially targeting the creation or expansion of sanitation and hygiene markets in 11 countries. Each target country will be selected based on market potential and insights gathered from partners including USAID Missions, NGOs, and manufacturers, enabling the Partnership to deliver the most efficient impact.
