Baseline Assessment for the USAID Expanding Water and Sanitation Project

Summary

The WASH Baseline Assessment was commissioned by Research Triangle Institute and conducted by IMPACT Research Zambia Ltd, and includes contributions from USAID’s Expanding Water and Sanitation Project (USAID Expanding WASH). It was designed to form an important part of the monitoring and evaluation processes of the project as well as to inform its interventions. Therefore, the findings of the WASH Baseline Assessment are expected to contribute to project design, implementation, monitoring, learning and evaluation.

Key results of the assessment indicate that: 

  • 13 percent of households, 14 percent of health facilities, and 12 percent of schools in the study have no access to water services
  • 12 percent of health facilities and three percent of schools in the study have no access to sanitation services
  • 4 percent of households in the study have access to safely managed water services
  • 40 percent of households have access to unimproved water services 
  • 32 percent of households, 67 percent of health facilities, and 69 percent of schools have access to basic water services
