Madagascar | Rano Maharitra (Sustainable Water)
Activity Description
In rural Madagascar, home to more than 80 percent of the country’s population, just 35 percent of households have access to an improved water supply and fewer than one in 10 households enjoy access to improved sanitation. To address this high level of unmet need for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services, the Rano Maharitra (“Lasting Water”) Activity will increase the provision of durable WASH services to rural communities, building upon the legacy left by USAID’s RANO WASH project (2017-2023).
Prioritizing sustainability and inclusivity, Rano Maharitra will enhance the Government of Madagascar’s ability to provide equitable and accountable water and sanitation products and services in 10 districts spread across seven rural regions of Madagascar: Atsimo Atsinanana, Anosy, Androy, Betsiboka, Fitovinany, Sofia, and Vatovavy. In support of those goals, the activity will facilitate partnerships between government agencies, civil society groups, communities, and local and international public and private sector experts to help mobilize financial resources for the WASH sector and increase supply and demand for water and sanitation products and services for rural households.

Illustrative Approach
- Utilize a systems approach to advance the sustainable, inclusive growth of locally managed WASH solutions, with a particular emphasis on empowering women and young residents
