Côte d’Ivoire

CONTEXT

The U.S. Government works in close partnership with the Government of Côte d’Ivoire to support their goal of becoming an emerging country by 2020. USAID helps to build Ivoirian capacity to achieve this goal through programs that focus on democracy and governance, security sector reform, and economic recovery, with an emphasis on reconciliation and human rights.

APPROACH

Côte d’Ivoire still contends with serious health issues, such as malaria. The West Africa Ebola outbreak highlighted the country’s inability to respond adequately to health crises, as well as the lack of health infrastructure. USAID provides technical assistance and institutional capacity building to the Ministry of Health to manage neglected tropical disease eradication programs, along with monitoring and evaluation, supply chain management, and guidelines for service delivery.

USAID efforts to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) play an important role in improving health outcomes in Côte d’Ivoire. Recent activities include a water and sanitation project to promote sustainable and access to clean water, and technical assistance in assessing and strengthening sanitation systems in Abidjan through the Sanitation Service Delivery project. USAID efforts have also included the development climate-resilient WASH systems.

With support from the USAID/West Africa Regional Mission, USAID/Côte d’Ivoire is planning activities to strengthen the ability of municipal governments and urban water and sanitation service providers to expand, improve, and sustain equitable water and sanitation services through enhanced financial viability, operational reliability, and transparency.
