Ex-post Evaluation – Ghana Water Access, Sanitation, and Hygiene for Urban Poor (WASH-UP)

Under the African Urban Poor Improved Water Supply and Sanitation (AUP-IWS) program, USAID/Ghana implemented the Water Access, Sanitation and Hygiene for Urban Poor (WASH-UP) program from 2009 to 2012. WASH-UP started in October 2009 in slum communities of the two major cities of Accra and Takoradi, Ghana. The goal of the project was to increase equitable access to improved water supply and basic sanitation for poor urban communities in Ghana by improving water supply and sanitation infrastructure, proper disposal of wastewater, behavior change, and governance.

This ex-post evaluation examines the long-term sustainability of results from the Ghana’s WASH-UP activity. The evaluation assesses current levels of service delivered by supported water and sanitation installations; factors that may have supported or impaired the sustainability of selected results; and how activity beneficiaries are applying supported hygiene practices. The team conducted a desk review; interviewed activity beneficiaries, partners, and stakeholders; and made structured observations at WASH-UP installations.
