Activity Description

USAID’s Support for Water and Sanitation in India (SUWASI) aims to improve health and productivity through universal access to safely managed water and sanitation services for all Indians.

USAID’s Support for Urban Water and Sanitation in India (SUWASI) aims to provide technical, programmatic and capacity building support to Government of India’s (GoI) urban WASH Missions focused on achieving sustainable sanitation. Three key objectives of the SUWASI Activity:

  • Strengthened WASH sector governance and capacity
  • Unlocked financing for municipalities, SMEs, and household WASH
  • Demonstrated innovative approaches and technologies for scale

The Activity provides full-range, multidisciplinary, targeted technical support to the Government of India to strengthen WASH service delivery, including national level guidelines, protocols and advisories, and initiatives. SUWASI is supporting cities to progress beyond Open Defecation Free (ODF) status and move toward achieving ODF+, ODF++, and Water+ certifications.

Since 2015 USAID has provided targeted technical assistance to the Government of India at the national, state, and local levels to accelerate the achievement of universal access and use of water and sanitation services expected from the Swachh Bharat Mission- urban, a countrywide campaign initiated in 2014 to eliminate open defecation and improve access to safely managed drinking water and sanitation services.

USAID, through the SUWASI activity is supporting the Government of India’s two key flagship Missions:

  1. Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0) focused on access to safe sanitation and safely managed sanitation services; and
  2. Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Transformation 2.0 (AMRUT 2.0) focused on access to safe drinking water and wastewater services and helping cities achieve water security.

Both these Missions cater to water and sanitation requirements of over 400 million people living in urban areas across more than 4,800 large, small, and medium cities and towns in India. The interventions under SUWASI are focused on providing a full range of multi-disciplinary and targeted technical support across the spectrum of stakeholders, for strengthening the urban WASH ecosystem in India at the Centre (Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India), States/Provinces (Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Assam and Karnataka) and Cities (Indore, Bhopal, Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Bengaluru, Moradabad, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Patna, Dumka, Dhanbad, Dibrugarh, and Guwahati).
