Ahmedabad Sanitation Action Lab (ASAL)

The Ahmedabad Sanitation Action Lab develops inclusive solutions to urban sanitation problems in slums and poor settlements of Ahmedabad. The program provides hands-on technical assistance, community engagement, and improves the management process to strengthen the water and sanitation partnership with the Government of Gujarat, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, Sintex Industries, Mahila Housing Trust, City Manager’s Association of Gujarat, Mudra Institute of Communications, and Theater Media Center. This public-private partnership leveraged resources from other partners to increase the impact of the program.  Two major successes include designing sanitation-related e-courses for city managers and tripling sanitation worker salaries to encourage better toilet maintenance through advocacy to the local government. The e-courses are available on the Government of India’s Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Mission portal.
