Activity Description

USAID’s Market Systems for Growth (MS4G) supports the WASH private sector by working closely with Activity implementers to address access gaps for WASH finance opportunities and improve WASH services and business operations.

Activity Objectives

  • Strengthen the agriculture and WASH e-commerce ecosystem to provide tailored solutions for Ethiopian firms and expand access to vulnerable populations.
  • Build community resilience and strengthen rural-urban linkages in WASH.

MS4G addresses regulatory obstacles to e-commerce transactions or the expansion of Fintech solutions and strengthens business associations’ capacity to support digital solutions at the sector level. The project’s WASH interventions support the growth and resilience of private enterprises through market-driven and gender sensitive interventions to improve WASH finance.

Specific interventions include:

  • Engaging financial intermediaries through incentive mechanisms
  • Engaging Business and Technical Advisory Service Providers and through Pay for Results contracts
  • Co-investing – through the MS4G Annual Program Statement window ---in market-based solutions

MS4G prioritizes secondary cities and coordinates with other WASH Activities in rural and peri-urban areas. MS4G prioritizes actions that create incentives or provide demonstrative results in the WASH sector which change behavior and practices in businesses and the business services ecosystem, or stimulate business service providers to test, deploy, adapt, and scale new services.
