Real Impact: Ethiopia - Productive Safety Net Program Plus

Agriculture is the primary source of food and income for most Ethiopians, employing 84 percent of people in the country. But for several decades, Ethiopia has suffered from recurring food shortages that have led to malnutrition, disease, and famine. These food shortages are brought on and worsened by droughts, floods, and soil depletion caused by climate change.

Water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) issues also impact millions of Ethiopians. Just 49 percent of the population has access to safe water and just 21 percent has access to appropriate sanitation.

Real Impact: Nepal - Smallholder Irrigation Market Initiative

Nestled between the borders of India and China, Nepal continues to struggle with the consequences of a decade-long insurgency that ended in 2006 but has resulted in a number of development challenges, including stagnant economic growth, food shortages, climate change risks, and high child malnutrition, among others. Nepal’s mountainous terrain coupled with frequently changing governments and interest groups vying for power have contributed to the country’s lagging development and growth, with an estimated 31 percent of Nepalis living below the poverty line.

Real Impact: Haiti - Feed the Future West

About 60 percent of Haiti’s 10 million people are farmers, yet the country still imports more than 50 percent of its food. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), approximately 80 percent of Haiti’s population lives below the poverty line, and more than 60 percent cannot access sufficient food to eat due to lack of purchasing power. Local demand for food is expected to grow approximately 10-15 percent over the next five years.

Pastoralist communities in Ethiopia exhibit some of the lowest water and sanitation coverage rates in the world. In order to contribute towards alleviating the prevailing water and sanitation problems, USAID/Ethiopia designed a three-year and four months (September 6, 2011-March 31, 2014) Water Sanitation and Hygiene Transformation for Enhanced Resiliency (WaTER) Project with a total budget of almost $8 million.
