Exploring the Intersection of Women and Improved Water Access

With International Women’s Day celebrated March 8 and World Water Day on March 22, it is a month for big ideas—about women and about water. On March 21, the intersection of these two crosscutting development issues and their respective global campaign days brought together advocates, practitioners, academics, and organizations passionate about championing women’s roles in improving access to water for a jointly hosted event titled “Call to Action: Supporting Women through Water.” The U.S.

March 22, 2019 is World Water Day (WWD). This year’s theme—Leaving No One Behind—emphasizes the transformative power of clean water to drastically improve quality of life for the world’s underserved and marginalized populations.


Call to Action: Supporting Women Through Water

On Thursday, March 21, 2019, in honor of World Water Day, Global Water Challenge, the Aspen Institute, and partners are hosting a Call to Action focused on supporting women through water access. The event is being hosted in partnership with the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Agency for International Development at the George C. Marshall Center from 9:00 a.m.–2:15 p.m. and will explore the critical intersection between water and women's empowerment.

World Water Day 2019 falls on March 22. This year's theme is "Leaving No One Behind," is based on a core pledge of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development—that everyone must benefit from sustainable development.

World Water Day is observed annually on March 22 to raise awareness about the vital importance of water to everything from public health and youth education to economic development and gender equality.
