In 2005 the Senator Paul Simon Water for the Poor Act made the provision of safe water and sanitation a specific objective of U.S. foreign assistance. Since then, USAID has been working in countries with the highest need to achieve a water-secure world.
This timeline of US Water and Foreign Assistance highlights milestones and results from 2005 - 2022. Going forward, the Agency’s investments in water security under the U.S. Global Water Strategy will be critical to advance health, prosperity, stability, and resilience in the places they are needed most.
