The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Gap Inc. share a common interest in improving the health and well-being of the women, families, and communities touched by the global apparel industry through improved water, sanitation, and hygiene services, and responsibly managing water resources.
The project pioneered new mechanisms for cooperation between public and private partners. Alianzas formed alliances by inviting new potential partners to participate in existing projects and jointly create solutions that could be implemented through nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) or government-led projects.
Nexos Locales’s main objective is to strengthen the local governments of 29 municipalities of the western high plateau of Guatemala and guarantee an inclusive, responsible and effective development. To this end, the emphasis is on core issues of security and justice, governance and development with the aim of reducing local vulnerabilities, particularly in relation to food security and climate change.
The WASHplus project supports healthy households and communities by creating and delivering interventions that lead to significant improvements in access, practices, and health outcomes related to water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and household air pollution (HAP). This multi-year project (2010-2016), led by FHI 360 in partnership with CARE and Winrock International, is funded through USAID’s Bureau for Global Health. WASHplus is also joined by a diverse set of NGO, university, and private sector resource partners.
This grant activity will strengthen Malians’ ability to lead healthy, productive lives by promoting malaria prevention and treatment, good nutrition and hygiene practices as well as reproductive health behaviors like family planning. Pairing social and behavior change communication with social marketing, the initiative will inspire households to acquire healthy behaviors and give them access to life-saving health products.
Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Malawi began implementation of the Wellness and Agriculture for Life Advancement (WALA) program in July 2009, with an ending date of June 2014. This five-year USAID-funded PL480 Title II program is through Food for Peace (FFP) and implemented in the eight most food insecure districts in the south of Malawi. WALA is implemented by a consortium of nine Private Voluntary Organizations (PVOs) led by CRS Malawi as the grant holder.
The Support for Service Delivery Integration (SSDI)-Communication project was a five year (2011-2016) USAID-funded social and behavior change communication (SBCC) project that worked with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and other stakeholders in Malawi to promote normative and behavior change in several health areas: maternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH); family planning (FP); malaria; HIV and AIDS; nutrition; and water sanitation and hygiene (WASH).
The Tanzania Integrated Water Sanitation and Hygiene Program (iWASH) was a USAID-supported initiative implemented by the Global Water for Sustainability (GLOWS) consortium under the leadership of Florida International University (FIU). The key implementing consortium organizations were Winrock International, and CARE International, supported by WaterAid, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and other local partners and government with input from others such as target communities.
