Strengthening resilience of Andean river basin headwaters facing global change

 This PEER Science project considers Andean headwaters, particularly páramos and puna wetlands, as socialecological systems (SESs) in which coupled natural and human processes like drought, flooding, water use and impoundment in reservoirs for irrigation, and mining act together to destabilize and threaten water availability and quality for human and ecosystem purposes.

Environmental Flows Technical Guidance Manual

This technical guidance manual was developed to assist Missions and partners in understanding the importance of environmental flow (E-flow) regimes and their benefits to water security and sustainable development outcomes. Recognizing that there is a vast body of literature exploring the environmental dimensions and practical assessments of E-flows, we explore and emphasize the broader community and societal benefits of E-flow regimes.

Resilience in the Limpopo Basin Program (RESILIM)

CHALLENGE

People living in the Limpopo River Basin in Southern Africa face water shortages, increased floods, and declines in crop productivity as climate change further stresses an already water limited region. Trans-boundary cooperation and action is needed to prevent further degradation of critical river ecosystems, to secure biodiversity and ecosystem services, and to support robust livelihoods in the basin.

Transboundary Water for Biodiversity and Human Health in the Mara River Basin

The TWB-MRB project was a collaborative effort between Florida International University (FIU), WWF Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Programme Office (WWF-ESARPO), World Vision International, CARE Tanzania, and the Mara River Water Resource Users Association (MRWUA) to support numerous governmental and local partners in the development and implementation of a basin-scale integrated water resources management plan in the trans-boundary Mara River Basin of Kenya and Tanzania. The project began in October of 2005 and extended through September of 2012.

Environmental Flows Management for Improved Resilience

Over the course of time humans have built dams to store water, bridges to cross mighty rivers, and canals to divert water to farm land with little awareness about the impact these modifications have on river flows, and in turn on the health of the natural environment.

Resilience in the Limpopo Basin Program (RESILIM): Olifants Catchment

CHALLENGE

The Olifants and its contributing waterways are critical for supporting life in the Limpopo River Basin. Yet unchecked pollution, inappropriate land and resource use, weak and poorly enforced policies and regulations, and poor protection of habitats and biodiversity are degrading the Olifants at an alarming rate. Improved water security, wise resource management, and healthy ecosystems are necessary to continue to support livelihoods and resilient economic development.
