World Water Day 2020: Water and Climate Change

World Water Day is observed annually on March 22 to raise awareness about the vital importance of water to safeguarding human security and maintaining the health of the planet's ecosystems. This year's theme, "Water and Climate Change," highlights not only the urgent importance of strengthening water security and establishing access to a sustainable water supply in the face of changing climate conditions worldwide, but also the many ways that shifting atmospheric and oceanic conditions are reshaping the global hydrologic cycle.

This photo essay was created by USAID in Exposure. It highlights the work USAID’s Office of Food for Peace, which has partnered since 2012 with Catholic Relief Services to improve rural households’ resilience to recurrent shocks, such as droughts and floods, and reduce food insecurity in Niger’s Maradi and Zinder regions. The partnership uses a multi-pronged approach to strengthen agriculture, livelihoods, health, education and other sectors, benefiting about 600,000 people.

Saving Livelihoods One Drop at a Time

For Haykal Jibrael Mikhael, a farmer from the town of Qobaiyat in north Lebanon, losing one of his apple trees means losing a part of his livelihood. And for decades, Haykal and many other farmers have been losing many of their trees because of dwindling water availability.

“It’s not the first tree that has died,” added Haykal. “Many others have died, too, because of lack of water.”
