WALIS - Madagascar Safe Water and Sanitation Survey

Summary

In Madagascar, more than 11 million people do not have access to safe water and 88 percent of the people don’t have access to improved sanitation facilities. For leaders, incomplete data on access to safe water and sanitation can act as a barrier to improving public health services.

In May 2017, through the USAID - Water for Africa through Leadership and Institutional Support (WALIS) Project, local surveyors and district chiefs surveyed some of Madagascar’s most remote districts using smartphones. After receiving training, 462 local enumerators surveyed 20,159 villages across five regions about their access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services. With this data, district and national officials can better identify the needs of their communities and help Madagascar move towards the goal of universal access to safe water and sanitation services.
