Strengthening Partnerships, Results and Innovations in Nutrition Globally

SPRING/Mali officially launched in December 2014 with the support of Helen Keller International (HKI). USAID/Mali tasked the project with improving the nutritional status of women and children, with a special emphasis on building resilience in the Mopti Region through the prevention and treatment of undernutrition while targeting the critical “1,000 days” of pregnancy and a child’s first two years.

Activity

Suaahara (Good Nutrition)

USAID has made substantial contributions to health and nutrition in partnership with the Government of Nepal (GON) and other external development partners. As part of its strategy to strengthen the country’s health and nutrition programs, USAID, in consultation with the Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) and relevant partners, designed the Integrated Nutrition Project --‘Suaahara’ (Good Nutrition).

Suaahara (Good Nutrition) II

The Suaahara II project in Nepal, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), builds on the success of the Suaahara I project. The project’s goal is to improve the nutritional status of more than 1.5 million women and children under 2 years of age. Suaahara II will cover 40 underserved rural districts of Nepal (38 districts from Suaahara I and two additional districts). As one of the consortium partners, FHI 360 has responsibility for providing technical inputs into nutrition assessment counseling and support. The consortium is led by Helen Keller International.

Activity

Nobo Jibon

Since June 2010, Save the Children has been implementing the USAID-supported Title II PL480 Multi-Year Assistance Program in Bangladesh, “Nobo Jibon.” The program is designed “to reduce food insecurity and vulnerability for 191,000 direct beneficiary households…in ten upazilas of Barisal Division over five years.” It has three strategic objectives (SOs) in the areas of maternal and child health and nutrition (SO1), market-based production and income generation (SO2), and disaster risk reduction (SO3), as well as a cross-cutting gender component.

Strengthening Partnerships, Results, and Innovations in Nutrition Globally

Despite significant improvements in undernutrition in Bangladesh in recent years, stunting remains at the high rate of 36 percent. A wide range of efforts is underway by the Government of Bangladesh (GOB) and other stakeholders to improve nutrition outcomes in Bangladesh. Through its Feed the Future and Ending Preventable Child and Maternal Deaths initiatives, the U.S. Government is at the forefront in support of the GOB’s efforts.

Activity

Strengthening Partnerships, Results, and Innovations in Nutrition Globally

In early 2014 the Mission is investing in the SPRING (Strengthening Partnerships, Results, and Innovations in Nutrition Globally) Project. SPRING will focus on averting wasting and stunting among 60,000 children through supporting work in the community-based management of acute malnutrition; infant and young child feeding; distribution of micronutrient powders to children under the age of five, promotion healthy behaviors related to water, sanitation, and hygiene, aflatoxin prevention and control, and anemia prevention and control.
