Stockholm World Water Week 2024: USAID Participation

The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) hosted World Water Week from August 25–29, 2024. This year’s theme, Bridging Borders: Water for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future, recognized the regional and global interconnectivity of communities and nations, and underscores the collaborative effort needed to achieve a peaceful and sustainable future. Decision makers, business leaders, civil society and academia attended the five-day conference to accelerate progress towards a water-secure world.

USAID was present at the event and engaged with global partners and colleagues, particularly around building evidence to action through the Global Water Strategy Action Research Initiative.

Participatory Approaches to Resilience Through Water Security

The USAID-funded Senegal Water Resources Management activity leverages climate resilience, not as a crosscutting theme or objective, but as a direct driver for inclusive development through collaborative stakeholder engagement. Participants will engage with a conflict sensitive, locally-led approach to the challenges and opportunities Senegal faces through a gamified exercise in which small groups must work together to review physical artifacts and uncover evidence as they work toward a shared solution for water security.

Bridging Borders: Water for Peaceful, Sustainable Futures

Water security must be achieved through collaborative efforts across borders, sectors, and constituencies. In this interactive session, USAID’s STAWI project will detail Kenya’s Intergovernmental Framework for resolving intergovernmental water disputes, drawing on Winrock’s transboundary and national water governance experience to co-develop a model for operationalizing the framework to mitigate conflict.

Bypassing Boundaries to Build Sustainable WASH Financing

This session presents the unique Public-Public Partnership agreement developed in Lebanon to finance wastewater treatment by bridging the boundary between two public sector bodies. In the wake of what the World Bank describes as one of the “most severe crises episodes globally since the mid-nineteenth century” — the Community Support Program worked to address the rapidly accelerating sanitation crisis caused by defaulted wastewater facilities. The session focuses on achievements and lessons learned in crisis management and strengthening wastewater infrastructure governance and sustainability through donor-funded capital development blended with local revenue generation.
