International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. This year's theme, #ChooseToChallenge, focuses on raising awareness against bias and taking action for equality.

USAID recognizes that gender equality and women’s empowerment are vital to the success of any development intervention. The Agency incorporates a gender-related component into all its activities, including those outlined in the U.S. Government Global Water Strategy, which the Agency supports through its official Water and Development Plan.

USAID helps provide access to safe and reliable drinking water, so girls can spend more time in schools instead of searching for water, and women can pursue opportunities to improve their livelihoods. USAID efforts to improve access to sanitation for women and girls is particularly crucial to preserving basic dignity, keeping girls in school, and reducing gender-based violence. March is Women's History Month. On March 8—and throughout the month—USAID will celebrate its contributions to advance gender equality and women's empowerment around the world.
