Strengthening Partnerships, Results, and Innovations in Nutrition Globally – Ghana (SPRING-Ghana)


In early 2014 the Mission is investing in the SPRING (Strengthening Partnerships, Results, and Innovations in Nutrition Globally) Project. SPRING will focus on averting wasting and stunting among 60,000 children through supporting work in the community-based management of acute malnutrition; infant and young child feeding; distribution of micronutrient powders to children under the age of five, promotion healthy behaviors related to water, sanitation, and hygiene, aflatoxin prevention and control, and anemia prevention and control. The project will work at the District and Regional levels in Northern and Upper East Regions and will leverage capacity of the Ghana Health System and the resources of complementary USAID investments.

Activity Description

SPRING is expected to provide both country-level assistance and global technical leadership to support scale-up of country-specific nutrition programs and to advance the global evidence-base, advocacy platforms, and policies for nutrition. SPRING is also expected to facilitate country efforts to scale up evidence-based cost-effective interventions to prevent and treat undernutrition, with highest priority on the 1,000 days. This includes strengthening local capacity to develop, implement, and monitor social and behavior change communication programs adapted to country contexts and realities.

In addition, SPRING is expected to advance approaches to improve dietary quality and diversity, including micronutrient adequacy. These efforts will build upon USAID‘s previous investments in micronutrient supplementation and food fortification. Overall, SPRING also presents an opportunity to increase the availability and use of proven nutrition interventions to reduce mortality, morbidity, and food insecurity. Achieving substantial reductions in these areas will require improved program monitoring and integration of nutrition interventions in health and other sector programming.
